For this month’s spotlight, we are excited to introduce Arth Hin, a Community Health Worker whose work is driven by personal experience, cultural connection, and a deep commitment to equity. Growing up as the daughter of Cambodian refugees, Arth witnessed firsthand the challenges families face navigating complex systems— experiences that have inspired her career supporting children, youth, and families to access timely care and thrive.
Arth began her career in a case management role within a community mental health agency, supporting victims of crime and assisting them in accessing mental health services and community resources. She primarily served Cambodian families, many of whom spoke Khmer and faced barriers related to language, trauma, and system navigation. In this role, Arth assisted survivors through legal processes, including court proceedings, restraining orders, and victim advocacy education.
Through her next roles, Arth developed a deep passion for supporting children and families with behavioral health needs. As a Family Partner with a local crisis team, she supported families experiencing behavioral health crises, collaborating with mental health clinicians to assess appropriate levels of care while ensuring families’ voices remained central to treatment. She later worked at a Family Resource Center, a Massachusetts initiative identifying youth and families at risk of justice involvement and providing early support before challenges escalated. Across these roles, she emphasized the importance of coordinated, family-centered behavioral health care.
Arth was first introduced to integrated behavioral health models in her position as an integrated Community Health Worker at Lowell Community Health Center. In this role, she worked alongside medical and behavioral health clinicians as part of an integrated team to support families’ medical and behavioral health needs while also addressing social needs. A key focus of her work was early preventive care, such as identifying infants and young children who could benefit from Early Intervention services and connecting them to the support they needed. Through this work, Arth prioritized early, proactive interventions to address concerns before they escalated and to promote lasting wellness for children and families. Reflecting on the importance of integrated care, she shared “Integrated health care is essential, particularly for children in historically marginalized communities. By supporting the whole child and providing preventive services—such as education on developmental and behavioral health—it expands access to resources families might not otherwise know about and helps set children on a path to thrive.” With encouragement from her supervisor and colleagues and support from her partner, Arth pursued a master’s degree in counseling while
balancing work and raising her three children. This experience reflects a reality shared by many CHWs, who often navigate similar challenges alongside the communities they serve. Earning her MA strengthened her ability to make a meaningful impact in the field she is so passionate about while continuing to support children, youth, and families.
After completing her degree, Arth continued her work with the Team UP Scaling & Sustainability Center at Boston Medical Center while also focusing on obtaining a clinical role with organizations that prioritize equity and access. At Team UP, she supports CHWs working in integrated behavioral health settings by providing training that builds foundational skills and increases their confidence, helping them expand their scope to address complex needs. In addition, she works part-time in a group practice that ensures clients with MassHealth have access to high-quality, equitable care, further extending her impact in supporting communities.
Drawing on her personal experiences and professional expertise, Arth continues to advance equity in care, making a lasting difference in the lives of children, families, and communities.
We are proud to share Arth’s story and celebrate the remarkable impact she continues to make every day!
